Sorry I have not been keeping up to-date with my reports over the past few months but work schedules, holidays and family matters have kept me busy. The friend that is Cannizaro Park has really been suffering in this dry weather. From the lush exuberance of spring, with all of the Rhododendrons and flowering trees and shrubs, lovely glossy green lawns and the massed ranks of daffodils we are now in a time when the park resembles a desert. The lawns are brown and the plants wilting. It is a sad old sight but we cannot really complain as we have had the main wonders for the Park in the spring and this is to be expected with this hot weather on these light soils with their free draining sub-soils. We still have the colours of autumn to look forward to.
The maintenance staff are doing their best but without resources we are always going to struggle. The committee have therefore asked me to look into the possibility of the Friends sponsoring some maintenance within the Park particularly in the entrance, the sunken Garden and the border by the Hotel. We envisage a partnership with the Council and the Hotel and I will let you know how we get on.
Many have noticed that the fountain is not working, so making the Park look even sorrier for itself. The pumps have become blocked as people have thrown in 5p pieces which have avoided the filters and caused the pumps to fail. In partnership with the Council we are getting them fixed and new filters put in place. It should be back on soon.
The summer festival has come and gone and the good weather seemed to bring out the audiences and I have spent a few evenings in the park listening to a range of shows from tribute bands to comedy and opera. We hope it was a financial success and that we have a return event next year. Congratulations to all who sponsored the shows.
I hop you all enjoy this new website but if you have any comments please let us know via the contact page.
